I used to be a young attorney in desperate need of a vacation, but I had no time to plan it. My vacation fund looked pretty anemic, too. As luck - or destiny - would have it my firm's travel agent called, pumped up about an excellent cruise deal.
I heard the price, checked out my calendar to make sure I really could go and booked the cruise at that moment. The cabins were neither the best nor the worst.
However i am a man that's always looking to enhance an arrangement. Was there some free way of upgrading? Could I buy discounted shore excursions or free drinks? No ideas came.
That's when it hit me...
I remembered taking a Caribbean cruise with my parents once i would be a kid. On that cruise I attended a few things i later learned was an enrichment lecture on one from the sea days.
Putting my past cruise experience along with my current need to get more from this cruise, I was thinking offering to do an enrichment lecture might be my ticket to getting an alternative cabin or maybe another little goodie. I figured it wouldn't go problems for ask and in to the rabbit hole I went.
My first call ended up being to my local travel agent, the one that found the cruise deal. I explained my understanding of exchanging a cruise lecture to have an upgraded cabin.
She gave the concept a decidedly cool reception. Clearly, she'd have rather sold me the upgraded cabin instead. But she turned out to be an excellent sport and provided me with the name of the person on the cruise line who booked the lecturers.
I knew before I called he that I need to be prepared to quickly and concisely explain things i been in mind. I additionally knew i need to be willing to speak on a number of different broad-appeal topics.
So before I found the phone I designed a listing of my interests and special areas of practice (and that we all have areas of expertise). I focused on topics that I needed a higher comfort and ease. When I needed finished there have been over twenty items listed. I picked out three of what I regarded as popular topics. Next, realizing that titles often sell books, I took the examples I came across around the non-fiction bestseller lists to formulate my lecture titles.
Furnished with my catchy titles, I called the contact in the cruise line. I introduced myself and informed her how excited I used to be being taking a cruise. I gave her my cruise departure details. Then I shared with her which i was thinking about trading an enrichment lecture in return for a better cabin.
There was an extended pause - and then a skeptical "Hmm."
Then i'm happy to report, she asked "what lectures would you like to do?"
Here was my shot. I took an in-depth breath and recited everyone of my lecture titles verbatim.
"We avoid upgrades," she said while i completed their email list. She explained it absolutely was not company policy. I felt the wind leave my sails (pun intended)....
then she said....
"However, your internet auctions lecture sounds interesting. If you'd have an interest you are able to give your lecture on your own upcoming cruise on kind of an audition basis." My heart filled up with hope. "If we love it," she continued, "you'll be accepted as a possible enrichment lecturer and you will get complimentary cruises."
Stunned silence...
Did I hear that right? Did I hear the phrase 'complimentary'? The question landed on my small brain using a happy thud.
Gurus her, "Did you say complimentary cruises?"
"Yes," she said, quickly adding which it would be my responsibility to offer transportation to and from any departure port.
"Jackpot!" I thought to myself quickly disregarding my upgrade idea. "Free cruises are a lot better than upgrades!"
Naturally, I gave my audition lecture and it was obviously a huge success. My cruise ended on Sunday and when I returned to be effective late the next morning there was clearly a voicemail from my cruise contact waiting. Her message gushed with excitement.
She said that my lecture was perfectly attended and received positive feedback from both attendees and the cruise director's staff. She continued to tell me i was approved being a lecturer and all I wanted to complete when I desired to cruise again was call her.
I saved what it's all about then listened to it again. I relished the minute.
This is the way I got my start and the way you are able to, too. Since that first cruise in 2002 I have taken between 2 to 3 cruises a year being an enrichment speaker and that i have had an absolute blast doing the work.
I explain to you this story for three reasons. First, I really want you to know i know what I'm discussing. I am not some guy who thinks this stuff works - I know it - because I have done it and a lot of my students have, too.
Second, I needed to stipulate another way of getting approved to cruise free. I label this the audition cruise and i also wanted you to view just how I started out.
Third, I really believe it is necessary so that you can follow your inspirations, your rabbit trails. All things considered the phrase "inspiration" means divine spirit within. I wouldn't be covering this opportunity and seeking to help you now had I not followed that inspiration within my panza in 2002.
Each time I chase my rabbit trails something good happens from it. May possibly not function as expected or desired outcome - but invariably something good results. To be able you commence your quest for approved status as a cruise liner speaker (or anything else you are inspired to do) become attuned towards the gentle nudges you obtain within and follow them. Don't over analyze and take into account the possible failure. Just act. A great arena of opportunity and discovery will open for you.
It's with that spirit you will get probably the most benefit from this (or any) book. Keep your mind available to the number of choices and, at all like me, your rabbit trails will turn to golden sails.
